Description
Side view of scrub buckwheat flower. Also called Longleaf Wild Buckwheat, this wildflower is found only in Florida.
Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium is a U.S. threatened species and listed as endangered by Florida. It is an occasional wildflower of sandhills, dry pinelands and scrub of the central Florida ridge.
Scrub buckwheat has alternate leaves, often reduced upward, that distinguish it from the more common Eriogonum species. The basal leaves are woolly-white underneath and green on top. The flowers are cuplike, lack petals and are covered with whitish silky hairs.
