The tiny pelagic creatures that live in these fragile shells are also called sea butterflies. They drift through the oceans with the pointy-end down and a pair of small wing-like appendages protruding from the wide end and providing a limited amount of mobility. Occasionally the empty shells wash up on the beach in great numbers, as when this photograph was made.
