A year-round resident of most of Florida, except the very southeastern peninsula. The range extends throughout the eastern United States, west throughout the Great Plains, north into the southern areas of Canada and south into Mexico and Central America as far as Nicaragua. Their preferred habitat is open country near trees, and are often seen perched on wires or fences.
Males have blue heads and backs with reddish-brown throats and breasts with a white underbelly. Females have a paler orange-brown throat and breast with a gray head and back and bluish wings and tails.
