Common yellowthroats are year-round residents of Florida and the southeastern coastal plain. These warblers are more common in the southern peninsula and during winter and spring. The summer breeding range includes much of the United States and all but the most northern parts of Canada. A large part of Texas is the migratory only range. Winter non-breeding distribution includes much of Mexico and Central America.
Both sexes of Geothlypis trichas are olive-brown, lighter underneath and have a yellow throat. Males have a distinctive black face mask with a thin white band separating it from the head and upper body. Females lack the black mask. Adult males have a dark bill, females and immature birds have a lighter bill, especially the lower portion.
