Description
Red mangroves growing out in the water of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge with a great egret standing in the background.
Mangroves are important plants in the saltwater and brackish ecosystems around the world. Their method of propagating with floating seeds allows them to root in areas that are alternately wet and dry. This allows mangroves to be on the front line of land creation and provide an important buffer to erosion, especially during hurricanes and other storms. Mangroves also provide an important protective and food rich habitat in the estuaries for the young of many fishes and other water life.
