Description
An image of many black mangrove pneumatophores, a few red mangrove prop roots and a single green sprout from a rooted red mangrove propagule. This photograph was made at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on Key Largo, Florida.
Mangrove is a term that describes many species of shrubs and trees that thrive in the challenging saline coastal environments around the world. These plants play an important role in protecting the shoreline. Their unique structures also provide habitat for many young organisms that are important in the aquatic food chain.
