Description
A 13-year periodical cicada on a plant.
This image has been featured in the following groups:
Bugs Bugs and more Bugs
Periodical cicadas are not seen as adults every year like the annual cicadas. Instead they emerge and become adults usually only every 13 or 17 years. There are a number of different broods of both the 13 and 17 yer cicadas and these are often offset by four years.
This cicada is part of the Brood XIX of the 13 year cicadas. There are three broods of 13 year cicadas. Bood XIX contains all four Magicicada species of 13 year cicadas: M. neotredecim, M. tredecassini, M. tredecim, M. tredecula.
These cicadas were in an area of the Ozark foothills of Missouri and I believe that this is most likely Magicicada tredecula, Cassin's 13-year Cicada.
