A lone slash pine in the early morning mist on Hopkins Prairie along the Florida Trail in the Ocala National Forest,
Slash pines are a common pine tree of flatwoods throughout nearly all of Florida. The range extends into the southeastern coastal states from Texas into North Carolina.
The needle leaves of Pinus elliottii are longer than 13cm (5 in.) with leaf sheaths less than 1.5cm (6/10 in.) long. The needles are in fascicles of 2 and 3. The cones are 7-16cm (2-3/4 to 6-1/4 in.) long
