This common vine-like plant grows in swamps, along riverbanks, in wet hammocks and other wet areas throughout much of the Florida peninsula and north into the coastal plain of Georgia and the Carolinas. Climbing asters are a perennial, robust, woody vine that is frequently found sprawling over other plants.
Formerly in the Aster genus, climbing aster has been reclassified in the genus Symphyotrichum. Some sources consider it as the single known species of the genus Ampelaster.
