A panicle of seaoats rising above the ocean backlit with a blue and apricot colored dawn sky.
Photographed in Ormond by the Sea along the Florida Atlantic coast.
Seaoats are a common grass of dunes and beaches along most of the coast of Florida except for the big bend area. The range extends along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Delaware to Veracruz, Mexico, plus Cuba and the Bahamas.
Seaoats grow to over 2 meters tall and spread mainly by the rhizomes as reproduction by seed is typically poor. The inflorescence is an open, dense terminal panicle to 60cm long with arching branches, nodding when mature. The individual spikelets are golden brown when mature and laterally compressed (flat).
Wild sea oats are Federally protected because the extensive root system helps stabilize sand dunes against erosion. It is unlawful to pick sea oats - including the seeds.

His entire life Paul Rebmann has ventured outdoors to enjoy nature. Whether he is hiking in mountain forests, wading through Florida swamps, or on the water in a kayak or canoe, Paul strives to satisfy his biophilia. As a nature photographer and Florida Master Naturalist, he attempts to bring the beauty and wonder of nature to others, so that they may see what they might not happen to experience for themselves, and to impart the importance of preserving our natural areas, not only for our enjoyment and quality of life, but also for the survival of the flora and fauna that surrounds us. Images by Paul have been published in field guides, various periodicals, exhibited in juried art shows and also used in exhibits at Lyonia Environmental...
