Black dancers are found mainly around ponds and streams having vegetation mostly in the north and central peninsula and panhandle of Florida. Also known from a few locations in Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas.
The species Argia fumipennis is known as the variable dancers. There are three subspecies; black dancers (A. f. atra), Smokey-winged dancers (A. f. fumipennis) and violet dancers (A. f. violacea).
Black dancers have all black wings that are typically held together over the abdomen while resting on vegetation over or near the water.
